How strong is the liquor excise case? After all, Manish Sisodia etc have not been able to get bail even in the top court. The arrest of TRS’ Kavitha also indicates the same. Govts do run berserk, but one presumes that the case must have some real heft for such a turn of events.
Remember that it is not just the Indian legal system – if you arrest a sitting CM, a hundred embassies will be interested in the case, they will be doing their own probe, studying the documents, weighing the evidence. Their reach, ability and access is far more than most. Besides, I also trust that a number of legal and rights activists would have been, and would be studying the case and whatever related documents and information is in the public domain.
So far, we have not come across anyone credible who makes out a case that there is no scam, or that the scam is too minor to warrant arrests and detention of such senior leaders for such a prolonged period.
Even those being targetted are not making out a detailed case about their innocence, except perfunctory explanations. The entire narrative rests on how Modi is targetting his opponents.
We need to understand both – this regime’s targetting of opponents & the muzzling of democracy, as well as big time corruption in top power echelons.

If one’s mind is custom-designed to respond – “But SC is also a puppet now, look how they kept GN Saibaba in jail!”, “It’s the same SC that sat on Art 370, Bonds etc cases for months, years,” – then it’s a separate case. And those, too, are hard facts. Hard facts, and hard to ignore. But a real understanding trumps narratives. We do need guidance in understanding the facts involved in the excise case.
