Today, Pakistan observes Youm-e-Siyah, reflecting on the contentious events of May 9th, 2023. Amidst political upheaval, questions arise about the truth.

Today, 9th May 2024 is being observed as Youm-e-Siyah (Black Day) in Pakistan.

Last year on this day, after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, angry crowds attacked the house of the Lahore Corps Commander, the GHQ, and military installations in Pakistan.

The DGI SPR Maj Gen Ahmed Sharif, in his recent Press Conference, threw the whole blame for this incident on Imran Khan and his PTI party.

On the other hand, many people believe that the incident of 9th May 2023 was stage-managed by the army under the London plan in collaboration with former PM Nawaz Sharif to destroy the PTI and install Nawaz Sharif or his brother as PM, and they were successful by massively rigging the parliamentary elections of 8th February 2024, which brought down PTI seats from 180 or more to 93, and increased the PMLN-PPP seats to bring them to power.

pakistan youmThe PTI, which has the support of about 90% of the people of Pakistan (as all opinion polls indicate), has asked the people of Pakistan to observe Youm Day today in protest against what they regard as a stage-managed incident, unwarranted attack on the PTI and its leaders and workers, and unleashing of a reign of terror in Pakistan by the Establishment (which really means the army).

The Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association supported the call for Youm-e-Siyah and called for a nationwide strike.

On the other hand, the Pakistan Government led by PM Shahbaz Sharif has decided to observe Youm Day to condemn the attacks on the army on that date last year, allegedly by the PTI.

To decide which of these two narratives is correct, it is absolutely essential to set up a Judicial Commission of reputed impartial judges, and in fact, that is what the PTI requested in its petition filed before the Supreme Court soon after the May 9th incident, but nothing came of it.

The DGI SPR Maj Gen, in his recent press conference, threw the entire blame of the 9th May incident on the PTI and its leaders, thus acting as both the prosecutor and the judge.

The main thrust of Ahmed Sharif’s speech and his reply to questions was that Imran Khan and his party, the PTI, had organized the attacks on 9th May 2023 on army installations, the GHQ HQ, and the house of a Corps Commander, and therefore, there could be no talks with them unless they apologized.

He described Imran Khan (without naming him) and his party as an ‘intishari tola’, ‘siyasi balwai’, etc., who indulged in ‘zehreeli bayaaniyaan’, ‘jhooth’, ‘fareb’, and ‘makar’.

To a question why a judicial commission cannot be set up to investigate the truth about the 9th May incidents, he replied that though he was not against such a commission, but really there was nothing to investigate, as everyone saw on videos what happened that day.

However, the question is who are the people in these videos, PTI workers and supporters, or agent provocateurs hired by the army? Moreover, the CCTV footage has mysteriously disappeared.

Which narrative is correct? That is something which only an impartial high-powered Judicial Commission can decide. But in the meantime, chaotic conditions will most likely continue in Pakistan. punjab
