The pronouncement of Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh is bound to have grave implications in the paradigm of universal Sikh behavior.

Giani Harpreet Singh, Acting Jathedar, Sri Akal Takht, while pronouncing the religious punishment to Sucha Singh Langah from the parapet of Sri Akal Takht, strategically paved the way for him to resume political activities, with a caveat to debar him from taking part in religious activities for five years.

Unfortunately, this paradoxical pronouncement made by Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has committed ‘contemptuous irreverence’ towards the centuries old Sikh doctrine of ‘Miri’ and ‘Piri’, being practiced by the Sikh Community for more than 400 years, hence it requires censorious scrutinization from the viewpoint of Sikh Philosophy.

As per the established Sikh ethos, Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht has committed colossal aberration against the Sikh tenets by practically rescinding the centuries old Sikh doctrine of Miri and Piri.

“Miri” representing Temporal Power and “Piri” representing Spiritual Power, and both the domains are perceived to be uniquely inseparable from each other. Then how could the Acting Jathedar (Head Priest) of Sri Akal Takht, attempt to deviate from the basic Sikh principals, which are being devotedly followed by the Sikh community for more than 400 years .

The doctrine of Miri and Piri was originally conscripted and conferred by the Sixth Sikh Guru, the founder of Sri Akal Takht, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji .

As such the pronouncement of Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh is bound to have grave implications in the paradigm of universal Sikh behavior. It is strange that while allowing Sucha Singh Langah to resume political activities, by implication permitting him to do all kind of nasty things in the political sphere by keeping just away from religious activities for five years.

I’m afraid this kind of selective freedom will allow Langah to commit much more offensive wrongs in politics in the absence of any religious deterrence.

Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht including other Singh Sahibans (Head Priests), who congregated at Sri Akal Takht to form a ‘religious jury’, are expected to explain to Sikh Sangat as to where was the pressing need to make special concessions and readmit, a thoroughly pervert person, to the fold of the Sikh religion in defiance of Sikh value system, who already stands excommunicated from the community being a sitting member of the SGPC on the basis of nastiest moral turpitude?

The Sikh Panth would like to know from the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht as to what happened to be the compelling circumstances that made him surrender to the whims and fancies of Sucha Singh Langah, wherby he had to revoke the irrevocable decree of Sri Akal Takht, excommunicating him for his abominably sinful conduct.

Jathedar is also expected to tell the truth from rampart of Sri Akal Takht and share with the Sikh Community, if his pronouncement was influenced and literally indoctrinated by the vested political interests of the Badal family?

Sucha Singh Langah

All the Sikh priests present on the parapet of Sri Akal Takht on November 26, 2022, at the time of the pronouncement of punishment to Sucha Singh Langah owe an immediate explanation to the Sikh community as a whole, as to why and how they have separated two combined realms – Temporal Power and the Spiritual Power, in utter disregard of Sikh doctrine in order to facilitate Langah to resume his political activities, who is otherwise barred from religious activities for five years?

The SGPC and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) also need to explain if they subscribe to the new doctrine, envisaged by the Sikh priests at Sri Akal Takht, separating religion from politics? They must come clean on the vital issue having grave political consequences for the Sikh polity.

Have the SAD (Badal) and SGPC finally abandoned the doctrine of Miri and Piri as envisaged by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and thus making the institution of Sri Akal Takht, irrelevant, for all time to come?

I am of the humble view that the sinister pronouncement made on Sri Akal Takht on 26th of November 2022, entails immediate retraction and all the Sikh Priests involved in the slapdash decision, must tender apology to the Sikh Panth and also resign forthwith for their contemptuous irreverence and aberration towards the most revered and established Sikh doctrine of ‘Miri’ and ‘Piri’ being practiced by the Sikh Community for more than 400 years.
